Tuesday AHW - ice

…As I cautiously tip-toed across the frozen ice, blanketing the lake. My sister and father were farther back while I dared to go ahead. I walked to a spot where the ice looked unsteady, " It's better if I go first, I know how to handle dangerous situations.", I quietly reassured myself. Indeed I was the most sure-footed in our family. I continued on my way in the center of the lake, I crept up to the unsteady ice, and glanced back, my sister and father were catching up to me.
I took the first small step on to the wet and unsafe ice, whack seemed like a whole leap of faith. I hit solid ice, then I calmly set my full weight onto that spot. CRACK! SNAP! My vision blurred; the ice was splitting beneath me! Would I die? Was I going to drown? What should I do!
The reaction I had was to scream for help, "Dad! Help! Help! The ice is cracking!" Without thinking my dad rushed forward to my aid, with my sister close behind. He grabbed me by the collar and was trying to haul me aside. Unfortunately, I slipped on the ice and my leg almost landed on that ice. At last, our brief struggle got us onto safer ice.
My heart was pounding like a bass drum inside my chest, just the thought of drowning gave me the chills. I could tell that this moment also knocked the breath out of father and sister. My father laughed, "We should not tell your mother about this." Then we all smiled, even me. But, that will not be the last time I go on the ice.
