What do yo think about year round schooling?

Debate of:

Year-Round School

I think year-round schooling is better because it helps prepare kids for college.  Over the summer sometimes I forget the things I've learned in the school year before. A lot of the beginning of the year is spent on review when we could be working on new concepts to help our academic achievement. "The widespread breaks keep kids comfortable while their brains don't get 'drained'," says principle of a Detroit public school, "it helps prepare kids for college and the 'real world" (Channel 7 News).  Students can excel in schooling because of the time spent on work and breaks where kids study while relaxing.
Many students are struggling with academics, in traditional schooling calendars. But with a year-round schedule, it's different, to help prepare kids for their future. "We have many students who struggle to achieve academic success in school," says Superintendent David Markward. "We need to take advantage of every opportunity that we think is logical for them to be successful. "A modified calendar," he says, "has provided educators [with] a time to step back—a time for teachers to make mid-course corrections before learning problems become achievement gaps."(New York Times)
Critics say that year-round schooling isn't well brought up because children don't get to spend their summer time relaxing, studying and having their own time. But will that help support kids' learning journey; not at all! And for for a fact, do you really think a 7-15 year olds will spend their time learning? In my own experience (not including me!!!) people have been just goofing of the whole summer. Though on the other hand year-round schooling will help kids with the constant education flow, but with minor intersessions (breaks) in between it can improve college test scores. Percent increase in year-round school implementations from 1987 to 2003 are 544%, think how much that will support future college students (California Department of Education)Year-round schooling is better because of college preparations.

Song. AHW Thursday

This is a song about being bored. (Home Writing)

Started out
Alone in the Milky-Way
No one would help me
And the dryness engulfed me in my sorrows
So will you take me to infinite skies
The shadows fall
and don't rise until we get to Infiniti and beyond

SO do you like the song. Right about know I don't really know what to type about. Thinking, thinking… and thinking, thinking… still thinking I've got it.

At Home Writing for Monday

what we did today:
TODAY WE REVIEWED OUR YEAR-ROUND SCHOOLING ESSAY

Updated Version is Above -

AHW Monday: I made this up
"This case is closed said Judge Roberts." Everybody shuffled uncomfortably in their seats. "But, we never unmasked the murderer of Sir Joseph!", the juror, Mia, called out. "The suspects we have are Shin Be and Niyathi…" I told them as I stepped out of the shadows. I was the greatest super sleuth, spy, de-coder, detective, officer, I was Ania of the BCS Dx association, (Big.Crime.Superlative.Decimating.Xamples). We were… let me reword that I am the best at solving problems and cases.
"Excuse me, but it seems as if you are getting the clues from the wrong direction," I said. Judge Roberts was infuriated, "You have no authority here, but, speak your opinion." I showed them my BCS Dx badge.

Snow Days
Poem

If had a snow day would that day be today?
Certainly not, tis the week's end today
Will the snow just keep falling?
And have all of the boys and girls brawling, for a break
Today is not a snow day, it's a school day
But, it will keep snowing

AHW Thursday

Battle of the books

Today we had a battle meeting. The Battle of the books is when 4th and 5th grade students from Birmingham schools have to read at least 6 books, 10 books in total, to qualify for the battle, you a also have to take an AR test and pass it.
Once in the battle, you are grouped into teams. During the competition… the team that can answer the most questions correctly about the books, WINS!

No day like today

Today we had an R&E Thursday, when we share each others' books.

AHW Wednesday

I took this photo while I was in Hawaii.

When I was in Hawaii I had a few BIG enemies, those were: the sun, waiting for what was next, and going back home.
The sun was horrible there! Without sun screen I would have gotten a sunburn, sunburns can cause skin cancer. It was also way too hot, especially for some one that prefers frozen water over liquid water. But, a benefit was that the sun allowed such a diverse variety of plants to grow, and it made things look nice.
I know that other kids also hate waiting. I was so excited and eager for a new adventure that I forgot we had to wait. Waiting did help us settle in and have time for swimming, though.
Going back home was heart-breaking. We saw so much: lave tubes, Volcano Kilauea, flowing lava, tropical flora & fauna, beaches, an assortment of ocean wildlife (including dolphins), a Luau, and much more. On the other and, leaving let us travel to many more places and learn about other cultures and natural wonders.
Hawaii was an awesome island!! : )

AHW Tuesday

Today was a one of a kind school day…
We were learning about the phrase, turned the other cheek. So, to keep this in us our teacher, Mr. Joseph, called my friend Jordan up. Mr. Joseph told her to slap him across the face. At first she hesitated and only tapped him, but then, he wanted her to slap him harder. She slapped him quite hard, I could hear a THUD! H didn't slap her back though.
That is how I learned this saying.

Monday AHW

Over the weekend I went skiing. If you want to know how I felt then you should read my earlier post with the skiing poem. I wish I could ski during the Summer, but unfortunately in some places in the world that is physically not possible.

I took this picture

Weekend AHW

Weekend Skiing
Poem by me

Unpack your bags
get on your gear

Clip on those skis
and check those poles

Skiing seems fun
but, doing it is better

Wait for the chairlift
then take your seat up, up, and away

Your heart beats fast
while waiting for such a thrill

Push, push, shuffle, shuffle
wait at the top and get ready

Butterflies in the Winter?
Prepare for a wild ride

Down you go!
As fast as the wind

Having fun?
When twisting and turning down the slope

Scream with joy
speeding, ahoy!

Don't you stumble
don't you fall

If you do…
Think of it like a mini blizzard

Get up, no stopping
Only half-way there!

Now back in line for the lift
Be set for another doozy

It is Snowing

I rubbed the steamy window clear, and peered throughout to get a glimpse of what was going on outside. The days before had been quite warm, for the middle of Winter. To my surprise, I saw snow gently falling down, looking like millions of elegant ballerinas twirling around in white tutus. Normally I would have told my sister, though today I felt like keeping quiet, this snow was special, the type of snow that you ski in, sled on, build snowmen with, make angels in, the type of snow that any kid finds tempting to play in.
I stared at the steadily growing Winter wonderland and wished that I could go outside. The cars all driving slowly, but, I knew that inside all the adult drivers wanted to get home as soon as possible. I never quite understood why grown-ups don't really like snow. Is it because it is to cold outside? Or… Driving is bad?
I love it when it is snowing! I just hope the groundhog sees his shadow.

How people in the old days used math and technology...

18 notes:

  • The middle of a wheel is called the hub
  • In the old days their calendar was only 360 degrees because the stars circled around polaris 1 degree each day
  • Measurement was commonly in use back then, for cooking, carpentry, medicine and more
  • James Anderson was a successful blacksmith
  • One shilling = 12 pennies
  • The continental army relied on tradespeople, because they didn't have the resources, tradespeople brought things from different areas which might have better things
  • The law in Virginia stated that any man over sixteen had to own a cartridge box, bayonet, gun, and other physical defensive and battle items
  • The year after the french started using the metric unit system the US started disliking them
  •  4800 inches of wood is needed to complete 100 musket ball crates
  • Slaves new math also, they also had business accounts and home accounts to keep track of
  • Soldiers carried "mess kits" to carry and prepare their food
  • The old time bakers, to tell if an oven was hot enough, used experience to stick their hand in their   oven and judge from then
  • Musket balls were made of lead
  • An abycuss in an ancient type of calculators
  • In 1699, Williamsburg was founded and the properties to buy were made
  • 2r = diameter
  • In the 1800 century people learned math from books, tutors & teachers, experience, or from being an apprentice of any skill

 Awesome Paragraph Starters

The sun went down, the clock ticked on and on…

My heart stopped, my jaws dropped, and everybody seemed to slow down when they came in…

I thought I was dead for a moment, as I dropped down the cliff's edge - to escape the dragon…

"No way! I just won the lottery…

There are more things to life than just extreme sports and money making. It was my turn to realize that…

I slowly stepped down the old rusting path, my mind was racing with horrible thoughts, it all happened so quickly…

I breathed in some of the strangely familiar fetid scent, coming from inside the monster's cave…

"Five," so exciting, "four", extra pressurizing, "three," head-bangingly awesome, "two," anticipation and curiosity blow out, "one," I just can't wait, "zero!"…

Song - Is There a Part
I came up with it

Is there a real life
When we look through the mirror
To seem like a good thing
But, actually quite wrong
Can we overcome
What has came to us
Which has no where to get to
Besides our hearts
I see the future
Turning its last corner
Is there a real life
Either good or bad
Can we get through our problems
That can break our heads
With all that we figure
It is only you

Gray
Poem
Ania U

A dark cloud loomed over my head,
and a gray fog blanketed my heart.
It rained, sharp needles that pierced my soul
I walked a silent walk, a journey of depression.
Someone, somewhere needed a light,
maybe that someone was me.
This was not a Spring rain,
this kind of rain tears things apart, things like people.
Shadows as quiet as the wind, grayed my way.
Like a dream,
that one has only rarely,
I saw the sign.
After every storm comes a rainbow.
The clouds that had once loomed over my head, disappeared,
as if the Heavens had sent them away.
The sun shone down,
it put light and happiness into my once gray world.
Those ugly thoughts chased away,
replaced with an array of cheer.
My torn heart,
sewn back together.
I had won the battle with the gray.

Note: I came up with this poem because sometimes I don't get enough sleep, which is rare, and I am in a bad mood, and someone always cheers me up

My Claim: I think year-round schooling is better because it helps prepare kids for college.

CREDIBLE SOURCE #1
Information Found:
  1. Helps non English speaking students achieve more in academics and learn the language
  2. During intersessions (breaks), students receive extra help in subjects where they are below achievement levels, to catch them up and prepare them for the future
  3. With shorter breaks it is more like in the "real world", adults don't have summer vacation

Wonders of the Wind

Weekend AHW and YNWA

I too, am European

I too, am European
I might not eat their food
But, I speak their language
I live like an American
But, I have their spirit
I judge one by attitude
Not by appearance
Just like Europeans do
I dress like a local
But, I celebrate like a European
By look, clothes, and food
I am not European,
But, by heart and heritage I am
I too, am European

(PS. I composed this poem myself)

Below is my favorite version of  You'll Never Walk Alone
I like this version because it is the origin song and no one is singing badly. It shows the lyrics, so, if you don't know the song then can just read along with the screen.

Quotes that I made up

There is only one today, but many tomorrows.

The past is there to help us, the future is to plan ahead, the present is to live life the way it was meant to be.

Changes to yourself affect others as they would affect you

A friend is some one to look put o when unsure, lean against when said, you are their for them, a friend reaches for your hand but touches your heart.
