Tuesday AHW - ice
…As I cautiously tip-toed across the frozen ice, blanketing the lake. My sister and father were farther back while I dared to go ahead. I walked to a spot where the ice looked unsteady, " It's better if I go first, I know how to handle dangerous situations.", I quietly reassured myself. Indeed I was the most sure-footed in our family. I continued on my way in the center of the lake, I crept up to the unsteady ice, and glanced back, my sister and father were catching up to me.
I took the first small step on to the wet and unsafe ice, whack seemed like a whole leap of faith. I hit solid ice, then I calmly set my full weight onto that spot. CRACK! SNAP! My vision blurred; the ice was splitting beneath me! Would I die? Was I going to drown? What should I do!
The reaction I had was to scream for help, "Dad! Help! Help! The ice is cracking!" Without thinking my dad rushed forward to my aid, with my sister close behind. He grabbed me by the collar and was trying to haul me aside. Unfortunately, I slipped on the ice and my leg almost landed on that ice. At last, our brief struggle got us onto safer ice.
My heart was pounding like a bass drum inside my chest, just the thought of drowning gave me the chills. I could tell that this moment also knocked the breath out of father and sister. My father laughed, "We should not tell your mother about this." Then we all smiled, even me. But, that will not be the last time I go on the ice.

Holiday Song
It's the holiday season,
and its common' for a reason
Its the season when families get together,
despite the weather
This time of the year,
truly brings the most cheer
Ohhhh, don't regret this part,
it is all about heart
Laaa, spread the love to those who are near to you, and dear to you
Have those sugar plums ready for thumbs,
ohhh, and candy canes, decoration' the lanes,
ginger bread, lying on your bed
Little boys that have winter joys,
and the little girls, just as lovely as pearls
Ohhhhhhhhh, and that is this season for you,
everyone having the holiday spirit!!

AHW make-up for the weekend
Over the weekend I went skiing. I can ski every hill - you name it.
On our way home we got caught in a blizzard (literally), which was why I was unable to post.
Anyway I have really improved my skiing, I hope to do it again!!

Year-Round Schooling Research
(updated version of argumentative year-round paragraph)
Note: the underlined words I copied and pasted it with credits to 'Opposing Viewpoints' , I read 3 articles having to do with this theory
I think year-round schooling is better because it helps prepare kids for college. Over the summer sometimes I forget the things I've learned in the school year before. A lot of the beginning of the year is spent on review when we could be working on new concepts to help our academic achievement. "The widespread breaks keep kids comfortable while their brains don't get 'drained'," says principle of a Detroit public school, "it helps prepare kids for college and the 'real world'". Students can excel in schooling because of the time spent on work and breaks where kids study while relaxing.
Many students are struggling with academics, in traditional schooling calendars. But with a year-round schedule, it's different, to help prepare kids for their future. "We have many students who struggle to achieve academic success in school," says Superintendent David Markward. "We need to take advantage of every opportunity that we think is logical for them to be successful." A modified calendar, he says, has provided "educators [with] a time to step back—a time for teachers to make mid-course corrections before learning problems become achievement gaps."
Critics say that year-round schooling isn't well brought up because children don't get to spend their summer time relaxing, studying and having their own time. But will that help support kids' learning journey; not at all! And for for a fact, do you really think a 7-15 year olds will spend their time learning? In my own experience (not including me!!!) people have been just goofing of the whole summer. Though on the other hand year-round schooling will help kids with the constant education flow, but with minor intersessions (breaks) in between. Year-round schooling is better with college preparations.

5 minute writing on Wednesday
The Element of Ania
"Lit., Sut., Pottas., Rubis., Ces," I repeated after my grandpa. "This is the rhyme you need to know to remember the first elements of the periodic table," he lectured. "Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Cesium," I guessed, "Correct," he affirmed and gave me an approving nod, "And remember, study those and I will tell you the rest later." I stared at him in disbelief, of course I want to learn the periodic table... before I get to seventh grade, I thought to myself.
That is the story of how I learned the periodic table. :-)

What do I think about year-round schooling.
I think year-round schooling is better. Sometimes with the regular school-year kids in my class and I forget things, so a lot of the year is spent doing review. In tests…
Today we read most of the time and I focused and listened as we were supposed to.

Thanksgiving Poem
What I am Grateful for…
I am grateful for my heart
That holds my emotions and the is the center of us all
I am thankful for my hair
That gives me the beauty I carry on my head and lengthens the characteristics of myself
I am grateful for the blood that pulses through my veins
That carries my life and will pass on my talent
I am thankful for my eyes
That let me see the world and the people I love
I am grateful for my mouth, with a gift
That lets me speak my truths, lies, my thoughts and eat the food that creates life
I am thankful for my ears
That let me listen to the good others say and hear the wild heartbeat that nature has in store
I am grateful for my nose
That allows me to smell the fragrant Earth beneath my feet and give pleasant and sweet smelling dreams
I am thankful for my feet
That grant me the ability to run from foes and dance to friends
I am grateful for my hands
That let me reach for others but touch their hearts and harvest the food that fuels these greatnesses
I am thankful for my bones
That strengthen my body and hold me up to new heights
I am grateful for my lungs
That let me breath in the air that Mother Nature breathes out
I am thankful for my life
That promised these gifts and cradles my soul
I am grateful for friends and family
That nurture my life, provide me with essentials, shelter me, and give the luck and thanks that I have always had
I am thankful for my life
That promised these gifts and cradles my soul
I am grateful for friends and family

What would you say??????
Today our substitute teacher read us a book…
At one point to characters had a disagreement.
The first character snarled, "I don't appreciate you!", but, the other character calmly said "You don't have any heart…", then she ignored them.
Our assignment:
We had to say something to the victims side,
What would we do if someone said they don't appreciate us.
I would cooly say, "But, I will appreciate you for your honesty.", or if they are physically hurting me then I would push them away, so neither of us get injured, last I'd purposely walk the same direction they are then take a detour and carry on with my business.

Wind Revisions
WONDERS OF THE WIND
WONDERS OF THE WIND
I struggled to hold on, while the falling rocks tried to release my grip. The wind was tugging at me, and threatening to pull me into the depths below. My goal was to get to the peak - where Earth touches the sky, very few climbers attempted to do so.
As I climbed my throat was parched with thirst, arms ached, but kept going to achieve my goal. The icy gusts of wind buffeted my golden hair up to a lion's mane. But, with the sight of clouds the hope rose. The ever darkening skies seemed only an inch away; I must persist! Every muscle in my body burned with pain! "Left arm, right arm, left arm, right arm, left foot, right foot..." I chanted in a beat inside my head. I grappled myself so high I could see the top. "Almost there," I breathed.
A new spark spread in my heart. A final heave and I hauled myself to the top of the bar. With mighty effort I had achieved my goal. I looked through the tangle of climbing ropes and spotted Grandma standing on the wood chips she waved, I smiled back. I had just climbed to the highest point of the play structure!
A feeling lingered in my heart - I remembered when I was younger and not as strong I tried to climb up but couldn't. Though, today I knew that I would succeed, determined I was able to climb to new hights.
Up that high I cherished the wind, I could feel the Autumn sun warm my skin. I was free! I could see the dust particles that tried to release my grip, too. Glanced down then up again, at the top of my lungs, I screamed "HELLLLOOOOOOOO!", I hoped to make an echo, and it did. I scanned the horizon looking at the houses, cars, and trees which all seemed like tiny ants. I wonder if I will ever get to climb a real mountain someday or name a mountain summit "Sky Peak". Well, I should better enjoy climbing play structures while young.
I sat there and watched the clouds roll over the Earth. In the sky, in the wind, in my imagination

Ice Skating
MONOLOGUE
I am an ice skater I've been doing it for about 2 years, though I don't have a lot of experience, boy, am I good at it. I am at level "free skate 2", I learned that a "fail is the key to success" - meaning when I was still learning I fell down a lot, so, know I know 100 ways how not to do a spin.
POEM
Getting dizzy, getting dizzy
Inside I have a feeling, that really gets me fizzy
The more I fall the less I miss
I think I'm getting the hang of this
If I keep on trying, but without lying,
Then soon, I can tell, others will be crying (with envy)
The more I practice this skill
Then I can improve, I will
A couple tries later
I am a better skater

Trick-or-Treat, Give me something good to Eat
Trick-or-Treat
Treat-or-Trick
"Trick-or-treat!", kids called out; that was the regular thing you'd hear on the night of October 21, Halloween.
Mia (my friend), Maja (my sister), my dad and I strolled the sodden streets, for one reason: candy! Mia was a bumble-bee, my sister was Queen Cleopatra, and I was Arachne (the goddess of spiders). This was the "perfect" night to trick-or-treat, while rain pelted down on us we trudged through puddles of murky water, and while others moaned and groaned about the devil's weather.
Chilled to the bone we walked up to our second house, clearly over decorated. That house adorned with a ghoul draping on the walk-way, dead gamblers (skeletons playing poker), miner 49'er, ghost of their "relatives", and... well you get the idea. "Huh...?", Mia questioned. As we walked up we noticed a sign on the front door that read GO TO THE GARAGE. It's...

Hawaii Trip Last Week (AWESOME)
Hawai'i Diaries
2013
Sunday, Oct. 20
We just back from a 13 hour long plane trip and landed in Kona Airport, Big Island Hawai'i.
We also still had a little bit of time to swim in the pool.
(My sister and I in the pool)
Monday, Oct. 21
This was our first full day in Hawai'i! Excitement level - High!!!
My sister and I spent hours in the pool's 4 sections - each having a different depth; equipped with a water slide, waterfalls, 3 Jacuzzis, bridges looming over and providing shade from the smoldering sun, and being fresh water - not salted. Including a 5th section that is a kids pool with a pool bottom lined with soft sand. We spent most of the time in the 2nd section, the one by the kids area (because of my younger sister). The lagoon was the best part of the day! There are: wild sea turtles, manta rays, coral, an assortment of tropical fish, minnows, barnacles, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and well - lets start from the beginning. This is a natural lagoon in the center there is the coral and hundreds of fish such as parrot fish or angel fish; by the waterfall are the sea turtles we I got to see or feel (not hurt) 9 sea turtles!!!!!!
Sea turtles are endangered.
(Areal view of the pool)
(This is the lagoon, the sign warns us about "...DANGEROUS SUBMERGED ROCKS..."
Tuesday, Oct. 22
Tuesday was busy. We attended a Dolphin Quest dolphin encounter and a "Legends of Hawai'i" Luau. The Luau was right after swimming with dolphins.
(I am kissing "Kona" the dolphin)
(The dolphin pool)
(Luaus are all about food and festivity)
(A show was put on about Hawaiian legends)
Wednesday, Oct. 23
Today we went to the Lava tubes. The area we went to was wiped out by Mauna Loa's (a volcano) lava flows in the 1980's, you might not think this is true but big Island Hawai'i is mainly a black desert - a desert of dried lava flows, some up to hundreds of years old. Not many people know of the lava tubes because it is literally in the middle of no where.
(The desert)
(Standing in the Lava Tube entrances)
(Lava "cave")
Thursday, Oct. 24
Today we had a once in a life time experience - we got to fly in a helicopter above Hawaiian waterfalls and active lava flows from Kilauea Volcano. It was amazing I still remember the feeling of lifting off the ground in a helicopter, we saw active lava in a fiery red-orange color metaphorically I would call it a "waking tiger". The pools of water, formed by the river, looked like bubbles as roaring water thundered down into the depths below.
(view of Kilauea)
(view of Kilauea)
Friday, Oct. 25
Friday we were leaving Hawai'i, but we had some time until our plane departure. During those brief hours I met a 5th grade girl from Australia whom I'd call a friend, saw a lizard, and took a colorful moment with the hotels parrots.
(A lizard)
(what we saw from our balcony, we had to soak that view up or we might never see it again)
(A lizard)
(A parrot paparazzi - these and other parrots danced around on their perches and squawked as if they were on stage center)

The Hunt: LA 10.9.13
The Hunt
A true Story
It was early morning in Yellowstone Park, and its inhabitants were active, the animals. We had driven to Lamar Valley - a popular place for spotting animals. Our car drove us through loops, gullies, and hills to get to our destination. Finally we arrived at our intended spot, on a rise in the clearest spot of the Lamar Valley. We scanned the view using our binoculars. Bison thundered across dirtied roads and in the distance they dotted the vista. Most of the people that stopped were hoping for bears. Suddenly I spotted an elderly couple pointing their fingers to a point and excitedly whispering. My curiosity grew. I walked up to them and asked, "Excuse me, but, what are you looking at now." The woman replied, "You see there, there is a grizzly out there ya see it." "Yes, oh my gosh, it is a bear, a wild one." I chimed. I dashed to my mom to get my handy binoculars, I showed her it and soon all the tourists at that pullover had spotted the grizzly. Timed ticked on, the grizzly bear kept doing whatever it was doing. Its shaggy brown pelt only a speck in the distance to a human's naked eye. "Time to get into the car," my mom called out, I left and buckled my seatbelt. My sister and I exchanged a glance both thinking the same, "But I wanted to watch the grizzly bear". Once ready we drowsily drove over the hill and the grizzly was no longer seen in my sight. Our car parked on a rise, my sister and I in no good mood, at 6 o'clock in the morning. I looked down at the ants scavenging for food and awkwardly thought what it would have been like to stay in the cabin. All of a sudden I jolted out of my daydreams, the whole crew (my family) was loading into our car. We went back on the road we came.
I noticed that others were doing the same. Of course! Those two people said there are wolves; just up the road!
I no longer felt like a drowsy "six o'clock in the morning 10 year old", in fact, I felt wide awake. "How cool is that, we are going to see wolves," I squealed, "Yes!" my mom agreed.
Five minutes later our car parked rolled to a stop, everybody wanted to spot the wolves! It was crowded; kids of all ages, 80 year olds and you name it.
Our car doors swished open, I ran to the railing overlooking a clear valley with a trickling stream, pine forests, bison, and elk - a wolf's favorite food.
Maja and I struggled to get a view of the vista, with all of the much taller tourists also trying to get a glimpse of Yellowstone's wild heart.
"Over here!" my mom called over the quiet roar of the wind. We bounded toward her and the clear spot she reserved. "Look over there...", I said. Effortlessly I spotted a ghostly white shape moving towards a herd of elk. I used my binoculars and then spotted 2 more rugged grey pelts.
